Like many organizations, Masonic Lodges have officers to direct
and govern the Lodge.
Instead of titles such as President, Vice President or Second VP, Masonic
officers are referred to as Master, Senior Warden, and Junior Warden.
These officers are formally voted into their positions by the members of the
Lodge.
There are a number of other officers, who are generally appointed by the Master.
Notably, there is the Senior and Junior Deacons, the Marshal, the Tyler, and the
Senior and Junior Stewards.
The Master of the Lodge is usually an individual who has memorized all of the
Masonic Rituals (not an easy task), and knows the entire operations of the
Lodge. It takes years to memorize the ritual and understand the workings
of the organization. To recognize the dedication of the individual who
aspires to become the Master, we honor the individual by referring to him as
"Worshipful".
The term "worshipful" is not a religious term, nor meant to equate the Master
with a deity. It is strictly an honorarium.
